Eine Bronze Skulptur ist das Ergebnis vieler, vieler Stunden Arbeit von Künstler und Gießerei - ein edler Luxusgegenstand.
The long way from draft to bronze sculpture
Talking about bronze sculptures means talking about exquisite luxury. As the sculpture is the result of countless hours of work by the artist and the foundry.
Das Modellieren / The sculpting
Am Anfang steht ein stabiler Gerüstbau. An ein paar Drähten werden erste Partien aus Plastilin, einer weichen Modelliermasse, angebracht. Das Modellieren kann sich dann über Wochen, Monate oder auch Jahre ziehen. Die beliebte Frage, "Wie lange braucht man dafür?", ist kaum zu beantworten.
For a start it takes some wire , nicely fixed on a save stand. Then a soft sort of clay, Plastilin, is added bit by bit. The whole process of sculpting can take weeks, month or even years. For me it is impossible to answer the most popular question, "How many hours does it take?".
DAS ABFORMEN
Die modellierte Figur muss abgeformt werden, um mithilfe der Form zunächst ein Wachs herzustellen. Gerade bei vielen Details wie z.B. den Ohren oder den dünnen Beinen von Pferden, ist das ein schwieriger Arbeitsschritt.
Once finished, the sculpture needs to be reproduced in wax. That is why a mold has to be build. Very difficult in case of horses with thin legs , tiny ears and many details.
Das Wachs / WAX
Das Wachs wird noch einmal so überarbeitet, dass es genau dem Original entspricht. Oder man verändert bewusst noch etwas.
Für jeden Bronzeguss wird ein Wachs benötigt, denn es geht im Wachsausschmelzverfahren verloren.
The wax has to be worked over again, so that it mirrors exactly the original. Or the artists can change small details. For every bronze another wax is needed as it melts in the so called lost-wax-process.
Um die flüssige Bronze beim Gießen an die richtige Stelle und vorallem in alle Ecken laufen zu lassen und gleichzeitig die Luft aus der sich füllenden Form entweichen zu lassen, müssen Zu- und Ableitungen angebaut werden. Und später mühsam wieder entfernt und die Stellen überarbeitet...
To cast the melted bronze to all the correct places and let the air out of the mold, all these wax pipes /connections have to be laid. And afterwards removed...
So kommt der Guss aus dem Ofen. Der Schamott muss abgeschlagen werden.

Guß und Ziselieren / Cast and make over
Am fertigen Guß sind noch viele Gußkanäle und Unebenheiten. All das muss der Gießer entfernen, Gußfehler ausbessern und die gewünschte Oberfläche herstellen. Im letzten Schritt wird die Patina aufgebracht, die der Bronze letztlich ihre "Farbe" gibt.
All dies beschreibt die sehr umfangreiche und langwierige Arbeit eines Gießers jedoch nur sehr unzulänglich.
Die vielen Stunden Arbeit, die Künstler wie Gießer in eine Bronze investieren, machen jede vollendete Skulptur zu einem einzigartigen Luxusgut.
When the bronze has been casted there is still a lot of work to be done by the foundry. Superfluos bronze has to be removed and the surface needs to be worked over carefully. Finally the patina is added that gives the sculpture it´s final appearance - "colour".
These words describe the profound work in the foundry only very roughly. It is many hours of work and a great deal of skill that makes bronze sculptures such precious items.

Sockel / Base
Ganz am Schluss gehört zu einer Skulptur auch ein angemessener Sockel. Granit, Marmor und schönes Holz bieten wunderbare Möglichkeiten, einer Bronze den passenden Unterbau zu geben.
Finally a noble sculpture asks for a matching base. Marble, Granite or wood are lovely alternatives.
